Eco-design means integrating environmental considerations from the design stage of a digital service in order to limit its impacts throughout its lifecycle.

It is not simply about making a lighter website. It leads us to ask an essential question:

  • Do we need to keep creating more digital services, or can we do better with what already exists?

Why eco-design a digital service?

  • Because every digital service uses resources

    Eco-design seeks to reduce the resources required to operate a service and to support use on equipment that is not necessarily recent.

  • Because sometimes the best digital content is content we do not recreate

    Creating a new website, database or application can multiply development work, content, storage and maintenance.

    Before creating something new, eco-design therefore encourages us to ask: Does this service already exist? Can it be reused, shared or integrated differently?

  • This is precisely the thinking that guides SeeOnSea.
  • Because digital sobriety does not mean fewer useful services

    Eco-design does not mean removing what is useful.

Our choice: provide an eco-designed plugin

Rather than creating a new website, we chose to enrich those that already exist

SeeOnSea was designed to operate within the existing digital ecosystem of territories and their stakeholders.

A Community of Municipalities or a Tourist Office does not need to create a new portal dedicated to biodiversity.

It can integrate SeeOnSea into its existing website and develop its territorial ecosystem to increase the visibility of its actions.

Produce information once. Make it useful to several audiences

This pooling approach prevents every stakeholder from developing its own tool or recreating the same content.

It also reflects the very principle of SeeOnSea: circulating biodiversity knowledge within a territorial network.

What is an eco-designed plugin?

A plugin is a component that adds functionality to an existing website without requiring the creation of a new independent website.

For SeeOnSea, this makes it possible to present local biodiversity where users already are.

Our objectives:

  • Usefulness: provide only the features required for identified uses.
  • Sobriety: limit the resources used by the service.
  • Compatibility: allow the service to operate across a variety of devices and configurations.
  • Pooling: avoid reproducing the same content and functionality for every stakeholder.
  • Evolution: develop the service progressively rather than multiplying tools.

These principles follow the recommendations of the RGESN, which is currently the French reference framework for eco-design approaches to digital services.

Eco-design does not stop when a service goes online

Eco-design is a process of continuous improvement.

The objective is to keep seeking the best balance between usefulness, user experience and digital sobriety.

ADEME also presents eco-design as an approach based on progressively improving digital services.
